Big day 43 miles, rolled into Butte today, got set up and drove around checking
things out. Now some of you are probably thinking they really slept in, No, we
spent most of the morning at the Deerlodge Prison & car museum [ 160 cars ]
The prison was built in 1871 and used until 1979 when a new prison was built.
Back to Butte from the campground we can see Our Lady of the rockies atop
the continental divide overlooking Butte at 8510 ft, the statue stands 90 ft tall,
poured with 400 tons of concrete and lit up at nite.We visited the Alice and the
Berkeley open pits ,Berkeley being the largest at 1700ft deep,about a mile across.
Also found the Granite Mtn fire memorial where 168 miners lost their life in 1917
was very nicely done.The Continental open pit mine appears to be the only open
pit copper mine working { large area }
Bob A forgot to post picture for you , in Montana they think big Ancondia fire
station about 1920
